The Japenese spider crab is a crustancean. It has eight legs, a head, thorax and abdomen two antannea and very long jouinted legs hangging under the spider crabs body.
The Japenese spider crab lives around the Japen seas. It has the gratest leg span of any arthropod, reaching up to 3.8 metres long (12 feet) from claw to claw. The whole body may grow to the size of 40cm. And the whole crab can weigh up to 19kg.
The Japenese spider crab feeds on shell fish and animal carcasses. The crab may live up to 100 years old. It is reported to have a gental disposition in spide of it's ferocious appearance.
The life cycle of the Japenese spider crab starts of as a Zoea (larva). That transforms into a Megalop witch agian grows into a more adult spider crab. Then gose onto grow to the full Japenese spider crab.

The Japenese name for the spider crab is taka-ashi-yani. Literally to translat (tall leg crab) their armoud exoskeleton helps them to be protected from larger animals like the giant octapus.
